Understanding Your Mood
Written by WILHELM HAST on September 6th, 2018
I have been reminded recently that it is wonderfully rewarding to reflect on the phenomenon of mood. Your mood determines what flavor of thoughts you get and how situations and people seem to you. It is your own mood that determines how you perceive others and the situations around you. When your inner mood shifts, it changes your experience of the outside world.

When you are in an open mood, you are feeling open and relaxed, thoughts flow freely and you do not get stuck in unhelpful thinking or frustrating discussions. If your mood is low, you will feel low and stuck, and thoughts will go on other, not always so helpful, paths.

As an example, this is normally the time we feel an urgency to act – to have that conversation with our partner or child and is usually not the time to make either those important decisions or have THAT conversation!

What is most exciting with the phenomenon of mood though is that we do not need to do anything to make our mood ‘better’. It is enough that we are aware of our mood, and where we are at and it will soon move and shift by itself .

If we ask ourselves the question "How is my mood right now?" And, then do not try to change it, but let it be ok as it is, then it does not take long before our mood changes for the better.

Why? Because our natural innate default is one of wellbeing, ease and contentment, and our mind and mood rebalance on their own. This is one of the natural laws of how humans’ function.

Try it and see. Take a few minutes during this week to check in on your mood, not particularly to do anything about it. And, let it be OK just as it is… without adding judgements or values to how your mood is and see what's happens.

Magic may occur.
Frustration can disappear in a moment.
New ideas and solutions may emerge.
Your mood may shift, and you may not even notice until later…

Or, if your mood stays low, then you can simply be more aware of the frustrating, anxious or urgent thoughts and be kinder to yourself. There is nothing wrong, just give your thoughts a break. It is liberating!
